Confirmations
After you send, the market waits for the network to confirm the payment before it credits your balance. A confirmation is the network agreeing the payment is final.
The wait protects both sides from a payment that gets reversed. It cannot safely credit a deposit until the network has buried it deep enough. Each coin has its own speed, and when the network is busy it takes longer. A deposit that has not shown yet is almost always just waiting on confirmations. Check it on a block explorer before you open a ticket.
